(July 11, 2013) NEW YORK– MIZANI, the professional authority for all curl textures, announced they will expand their U.S. retail reach by partnering with the largest multi-cultural and professional salon/barber distributor, Jinny Corporation. Distribution of MIZANI haircare and styling products is planned to hit 1,000 doors in major markets within the third quarter and fourth quarter of 2013 and will reach over 2,500 doors by 2014.

Build it…and They Will Come

ShopTalk International Magazine interviews Jinny President Eddie Jhin for there July issue. Jinny Corporation’s impressive warehouse portfolio is testimony to the company’s burgeoning success. By Pat Petker

If there were living proof of the American Dream it would the story of the Jhin family, owners of probably the largest ethnic hair and beauty distributors in the world. With a staggering 1.28 million square feet of warehouse space, they are major force in the business. It is astonishing to believe that this success was built in a relatively short time. Mr. Tae Jhin, the founder of Jinny Corporation went to America in 1974 to make a better life for himself and his family. His first venture into the beauty business was as a retailer. The shop was a success and over a period of time he added more shops to his portfolio. Eventually the shops were sold and Jhin entered the distribution business in 1981 in Chicago, Illinois. By the time of his death in October 2006, the vision of Tae Jhin had seen the establishment of four warehouses and a flourishing business. His wife, Ann Jhin was appointed CEO of the Jinny Corporation in November 2006 and has run the business with her son Eddie Jhin. They have presided over the continued growth ofthe business that now has warehouses in nine states and a showroom in Manhattan, New York. ShopTalk caught up with Eddie Jhin to learn the background to the sucesss of the business and its plans for the future development.STI: As with most successful companies, there is often one decision or product that propels the company forward and upwards. Can you identify what triggered the turning point for your company’s success?

shoptalk_pic_taejhinEJ: Almost 30 years ago, my father realised that the ethnic beauty supply business was something that he could get other Korean Americans involved in rather easily, and this is when he decided to become the very first Korean American distributor to support and establish over the counter (OTC) stores nationwide.

STI: What is the mission statement for the company?

EJ: To be the very best logistical beauty distributor in the world. We want to be the one-stop shopping point for all consumer beauty needs and to be able to deliver next day in America and eventually go into partnership/ alliance with key distributors in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and Asia.

STI: How many locations do you currently have?

EJ: Currently we have four warehouses in Atlanta, two warehouses in Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Oakland and an international sales office in Manhattan, New York. Our total warehouse square foot is a little over 1.32 million square feet with the new Maryland warehouse being added this June.

STI: How many staff does the company employ?

EJ: Currently we have 354 Jinny United members.

STI: On an average week how many customers do you service?

EJ: I don’t know the average per week but we service domestically in America close to 5,600 stores nationwide. Once the Maryland location is set up, we will have another 500 stores to service in the northeast part of the United States.

 

STI: You have a number of your own brands, what percentage of your business do these make up?

EJ: Our own brand is close to 20 per cent of our total business, if you include all the imported general dry goods from the Far East and also the hair and synthetic brands as well.

STI: You have a worldwide customer base, do you see that as a growth market for you?

EJ: Yes, our international business has been growing much faster than our domestic business in the past five years. This is largely due to the internet and information that can be readily available from all parts of the world.

STI: What percentage of your business comes from export?

EJ: When it comes to international business currently it would be close to 13 per cent.

STI: Is the introduction of the European Cosmetics Regulation in July 2013 a matter of concern for your business in Europe?

EJ: Yes somewhat – it does affect our total business but there are so many other products that it should not have mattered, but it takes time for our European customers to adapt to the new categories of products.

STI: Has the difficult economic climate of the last few years had an affect on your sales?

EJ: Yes of course, this has affected everyone in America. But on the other side, these past years have brought our company many good opportunities that we have not had in the good economy times, so this is why we have expanded to more branches in the past four years.

STI: What is your prediction for the ethnic retail business? Do you believe that the major groups will eat into the business of the specialist shops?

EJ: My prediction in America OTC retail business is that we will have many stores closing now and into the future and this will be same for distributors. But I feel very strongly that the remaining OTC stores will be much better than ever before because they are the strong that survived. I don’t feel that the big major groups will get into this market but I think the internet business will have the biggest impact on our OTC stores down the road.

STI: What do you attribute to the success that you have achieved over the last few years …

EJ: There is no substitute for HARD WORK and many good things comes to those who always act humble yet remain hungry and always eager to learn.

STI: What is your personal ambition for the business?

EJ: It is to have distribution warehouses and networks all over the world so that the sun never sets down in our company.

Starting July 2013, Jinny Corp.,the largest multicultural distributor in the world, will branch out to a new market segment of the beauty industry—the general market, or the Caucasian beauty market.

Eddie Jhin, top manager of Jinny United, stated, “Our company had been wanting to get into this market two years prior to opening our Los Angeles branch in 2010.

“I believe that this new market for our company will bring many new changes and numerous good opportunities for the entire corporation.”

Jinny Corp. will utilize its existing eight distribution warehouses to service and cater to the new Caucasian OTC stores located nationwide.

Jinny Corp. also intends to invest millions in purchasing new inventories and products to support this new market. They have also ramped up several more millions into new software and hardware to support all the details and technical issues associated with servicing various types of customers for Jinny United down the road.

Jhin added, “This new venture excites me in many ways because this could lead to having a global impact for our company if we can be successful this time around.”

This wall unit is handcrafted in South Korea and the craftsmanship is outstanding. The unit weighs 180 pounds and is equipped with lights to be able be see the logo and also the hanging hair. The slot wall finish is made of shiny plastic material along with aluminum inside all the grooves to make it much stronger and prettier.

NEW Jinny West Coast Branch Opening in Los Angeles California

Jinny will be opening to its West Coast customers, a branch in Vernon, CA.

The warehouse is relatively small in comparison to its other Jinny buildings elsewhere in the country. With its futuristic mezzanine, the free standing building is a 64,000 square feet with ample parking spaces, seven loading docks and high ceilings.

Eddie Jhin states, “Our Los Angeles building will service our OTC customers in the West Coast Region with much better and faster service in every which way.” “It was very difficult to be able to understand and service our West Coast customers from Dallas, Texas”, he said, and “I am a firm believer that in order to service your customers and to be able to better serve them, you must live and breathe the same air as they do”.

Jinny staff members landed in Los Angeles on March 12th and within less than 60 days, they will have opened our operation fully. Eddie Jhin adds, “Our staff members are the very best in what we do when it comes to opening a new warehouse. We have an awesome system in which we get employees from all parts of the company to do separate jobs, which in whole, complete the mission of opening a new warehouse.”

Jinny has a system in which they are very detail orientated and have the data on everything from the last warehouse opening to the very first one so they share these notes in order to preplan their actions so all the hard work can be completed much faster and easier.

Eddie Jhin mentions, “ I am really looking forward to our LA operation, the OTC store owners in the West Coast region are very progressive thinkers and they want to learn in “how to grow” their business through any means. We will guide our Jinny company to do just that for them.”

Eddie Jhin, president of Jinny Corp Addresses Vendors at the First Ever Los Angeles Trade Show Dinner

May 16, 2010, First Trade Show of Jinny Los Angeles at Los Angeles Convention Center and Dinner event at Wilshire Plaza Hotel at 7:00 pm.

Thank you for coming to the Jinny Los Angeles trade show and to this dinner event. My name is Eddie Jhin. I will try to make this speech short and sweet but it might be little long so please bear with me.

Finally, we have made it here to this West Coast market and I am very fortunate that our business has expanded over the years and we have been growing every year since my father opened his first warehouse in Belmont, Chicago in 1981. The amazing thing is that our company has been growing for the last 28 straight years without falling short a single year!

Our success is largely due to our vendors, the thousands of customers who have supported us in the past and our current Jinny staff members that have done so much for this company! They have worked so hard once again in L.A. and I am very proud to be their top manager.

I am fully aware that this new market will bring challenges and many new barriers that we must overcome. We will do our best in our ability to make things run the best way possible but it will take time!

One thing that I realize more and more that I have written in my OTC Magazine as well is that I view my vendors and manufacturers as my key source for success. I am sure you have heard this speech from your customers a thousand times but I realize this now more than ever before and I really mean this.

Our goal and mission for Jinny Beauty Supply is to build the best logistical warehouses located all over the country nine of them to be exact in order to deliver to any single store or distribution center in the country the very next day with a full inventory selection and no out of stocks. We currently have five warehouses and we have four more to go for the future. At the end of the day, we simply want to be the best delivery specialist who brings any product from point A to point B the most efficient way possible.

I only have one simple request from my vendors and it’s to build a good communication line between one another! I want us you, me and my people to work together to be able to compromise on issues and matters that are important for our companies and for the industry.

If I can give my simple advice to our vendors in this industry, remember that it’s not such a bad thing to view things outside our normal business scenario! We need to think outside this box that we have all somewhat trapped ourselves in. So I say to you my fellow vendors, reps and brokers, Don’t be afraid!

We view ourselves to be a different breed of an animal compared to any one now and in the past. You shall witness yourself that the more we do with you, you become that much more important to our company and we will value your business much more than you will. No one is in control of you or this industry except yourself and your own destiny.

Jinny’s desire in the future is to build our industry to be bigger than what it is today.

So this year 2010, the near future and years down the road, I promise you, we will work much harder and faster than ever before in making this desire come true.

On October 13, 2010, employees at each Jinny Corp. location marked the four-year anniversary of the passing of Mr. Tae H. Jhin with intimate memorial services.

In memory of Jhin, employees gathered at their respective locations and offered prayers and words of kindness. Tae H. Jhin, the originator of Jinny Beauty Supply, started the company in Chicago, Ill. in 1981. Jhin is also credited with creating the new channel of distribution that opened thousands of beauty supply stores nationwide. Jhin’s impact is still seen today as the OTC beauty industry continues to thrive and as Jinny Corp. continues to expand nationally and internationally.

Jinny Los Angeles Mercedes-Benz Giveaway

On August 2 at noon PST, Jinny Corp. gave a special gift to one very lucky customer.

As the final piece of the Jinny Los Angeles branch grand opening, Mr. Chang Bum Seo, vice president of the Atlanta branch, conducted the highly anticipated raffle drawing for a brand new Mercedes-Benz S550.

Customers were entered into the drawing by receiving one raffle ticket for every $500 of merchandise that they ordered and had shipped to their store from Jinny Los Angeles. Entries were accepted on valid orders taken at the Los Angeles branch from May 10 through July 31.

Jinny employees, customers and Ms. Candy Park, president of the California Beauty Supply Dealers Association, were in attendance to witness the drawing. After months of anticipation, Mr. Seo drew the winning name of Ms. Kil Ja Lee of Jenny Beauty Supply in Sacramento, Calif. Ms. Park accepted the prize on behalf of the winner as she was not in attendance. Ms. Lee became just the latest winner in a series of new car giveaways that Jinny has conducted over the years in collaboration with branch openings.

Grand Opening of Jinny Oakland

Officially we have opened our newest branch in San Leandro, California on February 28th 2012.

In all the years of opening warehouses, we have never encountered such permitting issues like we have in this county but at the end of the day, our Jinny Team has overcame all its barriers and made it happen!!!!

This situation has made our company ten times stronger and wiser and we will prevent this type of a disaster in the future openings in the East Coast and elsewhere.

In the history of Northern California, there has never been a beauty and general merchandise distributor and the Jinny Corporation would be the very first. Our main goal is to service every customer the very same day or the latest the next day.

We ask our customers in that region to support our company and vice versa we will give you the kind of support that you have never received as well.
